    Clock gate on abort: Towards energy-efficient hardware transactional memory

    Transactional Memory (TM) is an emerging technology which promises to make parallel programming easier compared to earlier lock based approaches. However, as with any form of speculation, Transactional Memory too wastes a considerable amount of energy when the speculation goes wrong and transaction aborts. For Transactional Memory this wastage will typically be quite high because programmer will often mark a large portion of the code to be executed transactionally. We are proposing to turn-off a processor dynamically by gating all its clocks, whenever any transaction running in it is aborted. We have described a novel protocol which can be used in the Scalable-TCC like Hardware Transactional Memory systems. Also in the protocol we are proposing a gating-aware contention management policy to set the duration of the clock gating period precisely so that both performance and energy can be improved.     Congenital absence of ribs: a rare association in infant of diabetic mother

    Maternal diabetes, type1, type 2 or gestational diabetes has an increased risk of congenital malformation in fetus. It is also the most common cause of perinatal mortality in these infants. Although various malformation reported in literature, our case of congenital absence of ribs and adjacent intercostal muscles in an infant of diabetic mother is not reported earlier. Poor glycemic control may be the cause of teratogenesis. Asymptomatic single rib absence is managed conservatively but for absence of multiple ribs, surgical repair is required

    Newborn Aides: An Innovative Approach in Sick Newborn Care at a District-level Special Care Unit

    A Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), established in a district hospital in India, substantially reduced the neonatal mortality rate in the district; it, however, suffered from a dearth of trained nurses. Local girls with 10-12 years of school education underwent structured and hands-on training for six months, followed by a six-month internship at the SNCU and were assigned to it as stipendiary ‘Newborn Aides’. Based on the results of formal examinations, internal on-the-job assessment and interview of doctors, nurses, and parents and their technical skills and motivation were rated very high. Although the incremental cost of training is small, the cost of sustaining them, i.e. stipend and replacing attrition, needs to be addressed. Trained Newborn Aides may substantially alleviate human-resource constraint for SNCUs and Sick Newborn Stabilization units in smaller peripheral hospitals for care of sick newborns at an affordable cost

We have come forth with an innovative “automated sanitization device” which makes the process of hand sanitization and temperature screening rapid, automatic and easier. The proposed automated sanitization device contributes significantly to prevent the spread of the virus and also raises awareness to increase hygiene at public places. The concept of embedded systems with various sensors attached to a PCB has been used in designing of the device. This paper addresses the methodological details of proposed automated sanitization device while focusing on its technical as well as financial expects. The proposed device is anticipated to be used at various public places like workplaces, residences, railway stations etc. working of this model, addressing both the technical as well as the financial aspect

    Geometric flows and black hole entropy

    Perelman has given a gradient formulation for the Ricci flow, introducing an ``entropy function'' which increases monotonically along the flow.We pursue a thermodynamic analogy and apply Ricci flow ideas to general relativity. We investigate whether Perelman's entropy is related to (Bekenstein-Hawking)geometric entropy as familiar from black hole thermodynamics. From a study of the fixed points of the flow we conclude that Perelman entropy is not connected to geometric entropy. However, we notice that there is a very similar flow which DOES appear to be connected to geometric entropy. The new flow may find applications in black hole physics suggesting for instance, new approaches to the Penrose inequality.Comment: 11 pages, no figure

    Energy, entropy and the Ricci flow

    The Ricci flow is a heat equation for metrics, which has recently been used to study the topology of closed three manifolds. In this paper we apply Ricci flow techniques to general relativity. We view a three dimensional asymptotically flat Riemannian metric as a time symmetric initial data set for Einstein's equations. We study the evolution of the area A and Hawking mass M of a two dimensional closed surface under the Ricci flow. The physical relevance of our study derives from the fact that, in general relativity the area of apparent horizons is related to black hole entropy and the Hawking mass of an asymptotic round 2-sphere is the ADM energy.We begin by considering the special case of spherical symmetry to develop a physical feel for the geometric quantities involved. We then consider a general asymptotically flat Riemannian metric and derive an inequality which relates the evolution of the area of a closed surface S to its Hawking mass. We suggest that there may be a maximum principle which governs the long term existence of the asymptotically flat Ricci flow.Comment: 24 pages, two figures, paper improved in response to referees' comments, to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravit

    Myanmar’s economy has been affected by numerous internal and external shocks since 2020. This report takes stock of the effect of these shocks on Myanmar’s workers and their well-being using a reliable new source of household data. The report compares employment indicators from 2017 and 2022 to spotlight the extent of adversity faced by workers and households. Employment indicators for 2017 are based on official Myanmar living conditions survey (MLCS) data. MSPS provides reliable employment indicators at the sub-national level for 2022 that are comparable with baseline official data from 2017. While anchored in the MSPS, this report complements quantitative data with qualitative insights from the community welfare monitoring surveys, in particular the March 2023 round, conducted by the World Bank since 2020. This report is organized as follows: chapter 1 provides a snapshot of overall labor market changes since 2017 and focuses on disparities by gender, employment type, industry of occupation, and other worker characteristics. Chapter 2 analyzes similarities and differences in level employment indicators by state and regions.
